Reminiscing the small red box

I thought I was the happiest girl in the world that time...

sleeping

Friday afternoon, after our Christmas Party, I was slumbering at my desk (wrought by the freaking db migration) when he tapped me and asked if I wanted to sleep in the barracks. I said I'm okay, I'll be taking up some rest before going out to eat supper at 7.

He said he wanted to give me something.

Then, he handed me a small square red box. Cautiously, I opened the box.

Though I had an idea its content, the pair of pearl earrings and necklace inside caught my surprise.

"Galing sa 'yo?" I asked him. (Is it from you?)

"Oo," he said. (Yes.)

"Bakit?" I asked again. (Why?)

He gave me the pair of earrings.

This is for you being the only person to text me while I was in Cebu.1

Consequently, he took out the necklace.

For being my chat mate when I was in Mindanao and for giving me reasons to excuse myself from the drinking officers.2

I was stunned. I still couldn't believe he appreciated those small things that he'd think of giving me jewelries. I mean jewelries, of all things. I was so weirded out that time all I could say was...

"Thank you."

I was in a gesture to keep the box when he interrupted.

"Do you notice something missing from the set?" he asked.

I looked inside the small red box again.

"I think I know."

I was half-excited and half-nervous.

Finally, he took out the ring.

...For being the cutest...

I snapped the ring from his fingers. And didn't let him finish what he was about to say.

He understood me, knowing I didn't want myself to be embarrassed.

"Thank you," I said again with modesty, trying to hide the overwhelming feeling inside.

(I realized later on that I should have hugged him real tight. - TSK)

"Do you give these sort of things to your other girl friends?" I asked, hoping to clear whatever assumption was brewing in my mind.

"No," he answered bluntly.

"Pero wag kang mag-alala kasi friends lang naman tayo. (But don't worry 'cause we're only friends). Besides, the jewelries are really cheap in Davao. Well, there's a first time for everything... you know."

Speechless. Yes I was. My memory right after that event seemed to have drowned in the depths of obscurity only so I can remember this one feeling. All I could remember was I went back to the barracks later that afternoon to take a nap. But I couldn't dare to rest.

I was figuratively walking in Cloud 9.

(Retold from original post at my LJ).

1I remember it was September or October when he went on a mission to Cebu for a week. He had already been a close friend. I missed that person who bugged me to eat lunch and join his team in DoTA, and so I asked if he's okay now that he's gone the farthest among our peers. He replied as if sharing with me his amazement over the beauty of the place they've gone to. He gave me a guitar key chain as a pasalubong. :)
2For the nth time, he traveled far and long again. He was away for two weeks! And my peers and I are so green with envy. Not only he'd gone to places, he also earned his per diem pay! He brought me a malong for pasalubong. :)
