Lady Eagles - UAAP Season 70 Women’s Basketball Champs!

I just read about it now when an email was forwarded to our batch mailing list. It’s about a Lady Eagle’s grievances towards those who equate UAAP with men’s basketball.

“Talo Ateneo.”

Everyone in school was talking about the game last sunday. For all those who didn’t know, the Lady Eagles are the UAAP Season 70 Womens Basketball Champions last SATURDAY, September 29, 2007. It was our second in three years. Yeah. I think I have the right to brag about our victory because it was a hard fought game and we deserve recognition.

When the Ateneo mens team lost, I had mixed emotions. I was sad for Ken of course because his coach didn’t give him a chance to play in that game. Just as I’ve said in my last post, sa lagay na ito, hindi pa kami nag training sa states. Come on guys (mens team). Your team is much more pampered than the other UAAP teams combined. I don’t blame you guys for having such die hard fans but I think its just reasonable enough to give your fans/supporters/sponsors their money’s worth.

Our team never had so many supporters. Ang ticket sa womens game in the elims, 30 pesos lang and I guarantee you, WALANG PILA. Medyo umangat nung finals, 100 pesos na kasi sa Ninoy Aquino Stadium. We never got a chance to play in Araneta this season and even if we did, I don’t think it would be cramped like the last Ateneo vs La Salle game. Bakit nga naman kami ilalagay sa Araneta if our games are not “profit making”. We never had televised games either. Nung finals lang and it was because the match after us was the Ateneo and DLSZ Juniors. This year, our team does not have the luxury to go training abroad before the UAAP Season. We never had a formal team building because we don’t have enough funds. Nag paint ball lang kami sa Antipolo then sleep over sa house ng teammate namin. Masaya na kami dun. Our recovery meals would consist of a variety of fast food meals: Jollibee, Greenwich or whatever is available unlike the mens team. If their meals are not catered, some rich Ateneo alumni would sponsor their inner (gabi kasi yung games). I am not complaining about our situation. I am just citing some of the facts you guys need to know. I guess every other UAAP team except for the mens team feel the same.

We also have our share of supporters and I am very thankful to them. Pero yun nga, sometimes I can’t help but compare my team to Ken’s team. When we were informed that Adidas would be giving us three basketball shoes this season, parang champion na rin kagad kami! Haha.

Last friday, my teammate told me that her teacher upon hearing the bell told the class “Okay class. See you on Sunday.” Parang gusto daw niya sabihin, “Excuse me! kami nga saturday na no!”

“Mas mabigat ang pressure sa mens team kasi ang daming nag eexpect sa kanila.” KAYA NGA EH. The more they should prove themselves to be worthy of what they are receiving. Kung pressure lang ang pag uusapan, lahat ng tao may pressure.

Well, I cannot blame the mens team either. Siguro kaya kami marginalized is because of the fact na WOMENS team kami. Hay nakow. Napaka biased talaga ng society na ito.

Oh well. Basta kami Champion. :)

Yay! And so I’m posting this just to let everyone know. :)

hmmm. i never really liked basketball, but what can I say, CONGRATS sa women’s team nyo.

Nalungkot din ako nung natalo yung men’s team. Kahit papano, minahal ko ang ateneo sa 3 month stay ko dun. :)
