On working, studying and playing

For me, working never mixes well with studying. More often, when I work on something interesting enough, studying is set aside and sometimes eventually forgotten until the superior comes asking about our progress regarding material he assigned for reading.

Last week, we were given a week to finish Head First OOAD. We were set to apply what we understood on the projects we’re about to turn-over to our juniors. But I was also enthusiastic about finishing the UI face-lift of the system upgraded by my colleague. I’m new to running JBoss and I haven’t tinkered with Struts for a while now so I prioritized the work over the assignment.

Then this morning, the boss came asking why we failed to read the whole 10 chapters of the book. There’s no point in telling him about the extra tasks we have to do (like assisting the instructor in the computer literacy program and playing sentinel on the ever vacant pseudo-internet center) since it must already be bundled with our schedule and thus, it’s up to us to manage our time. Of course I wouldn’t tell about the (numerous) time(s) I got tempted to play DoTA with workmates (and justify that it’s the only form of entertainment and stress-relieving activity we have since we are on duty 24/7, hah).

The boss is not the type to command us to drop to the ground and make us do push ups or squat rush. I didn’t receive any disciplinary action of that sort. But I still felt punished when he made sure I’ll agree to catch up, finish the book and the application by next week.

Well, now, I already dragged studying the first one on queue. Moreover, I found a less damaging mix to it. I’m tempted to say taking a nap but it’s a rather solo activity and doesn’t really mix with studying. So then, I’m saying that listening to In Flames keeps me awake enough to go though the pages of the book. (And understand even just a bit.)
