LOL, caught a theme rip-off

Exactly, how does it feel to be “ripped-off” of ideas? More so, to be “ripped-off” of your “physical” designs? Ugh. Take a look a this. Open a new browser tab, navigate to this page and make sure you are able to compare the two. Notice the difference?

  • The layout?
    Notice the difference?
    No.
  • The typography?
    Typography
    No.
  • The stylesheets
    mine
    and
    rip-off
    HELL! No.

The only difference I could see are the James Bond-related background images. If ThemeViewer has employed more moderators to “keep down” the volume of theme rip-offs, perhaps this one was cunning enough like James Bond to get past their scrutiny.

Honestly, I wouldn’t fret this much if the creator of this rip-off theme had the courtesy to modify the CSS of the original theme. Dude, it’s not easy to code these things.

UPDATE: Got this email from the maintainer of ThemeViewer, TheUndersigned:

Thanks for the notice, the theme has been deleted. :)

Sincerely,
Thomas Silkjær

Now all I can say is we need to be vigilant if we don’t want anybody desecrating our creations. :P Thanks for the quick action.

Exact rip off of your theme, the ripper’s site has even more themes based on the same CSS. But you’re not alone, today a smurf rereleased my theme (new yorker) without permission and sponsor links, which I don’t accept in any way.

That totally sucks! How did you find that rip-off theme? Maybe you can report to the people in charge of wordpress.net and have that copycat theme removed and ban that copycat author from posting themes again.

@Milo: Yes, I bet I’m not alone on this matter cause there are more themes that are far lot greater than mine to copy.

@Jaypee: I was only browsing through the newly-released themes and I just happened to see the thumbnail of this very familiar layout. I already reported it and I guess it’s their decision to remove the culprit or not.

I’ve had a few people rip off themes from me. I was tempted to submit a few of my free ones to wordpress and then decided against it because of the lack of originality people seem to have these days when “making something their own”. There’s a big difference in creating a new theme with a current themes ideas than to completely rip someone off. It’s absurd!

It sucks what that guy did but at least you were able to get it straightened out to some degree.

    Hope it doesn’t happen again.

That sucks so much that someone ripped off your theme. I am glad that they took the right action and deleted it! Also just wanted to say your theme is really nice!

It’s the same when people just blatantly use things without giving the proper credit, link to the provider. And if you are going to customize a theme, you have to acknowledge that it is not yours originally. Not just call it your own.

People who rips off other people’s work are lame. Glad it got taken offline that fast :)

On the other hand, nobody is able to avoid that crappy people love to be copycats and claim your stuff. Let’s hope this copycat has learned his/her from this action.
