Spending weekends with Fluffy is always rewarding 'cause I always get to watch some quality anime with him, play PS2 or watch our type of movie, and more ;). Last week, we only finished two episodes of Basilisk Kouga Ninpo Cho (The Kouga Ninja Scrolls) leaving both of us too excited to watch finish off the whole series this weekend. We thought we wouldn't be able to watch the 22 episodes left, but we did!

Basilisk is one of those short anime series that I would want to collect. Purchase an original DVD copy, that is. When I saw the first two episodes, I swore that I wouldn't let Fluffy watch this anime without me. Well, he kind of left me off in watching some of the anime we both liked. We began watching Prince of Tennis and Yakitate! Japan together but after episode 20+, I was left behind. Now I'm not sure if I'd still want to see the rest of some of the series. But I swear I would catch up with Yakitate! cause it's OMG hilarious! I saw a part of the episode where they spoofed LoTR! LOL. Well, Yakitate is another story...
Warning: There might be spoilers ahead!

Back to Basilisk, we already know the ending, since there is actually a live-action movie counterpart of this novel/manga-based anime series called Shinobi: Heart Under Blade, which was already seen by Fluffy. It was amusing to recall our conversation while watching the anime because we would bet on who is going to die next. And just like any other anime or movie-adaptations of novels and manga, there can be slight to major differences between the versions so it would be impossible to predict every scene.
Ten ninjas from each clan fought in the anime (only five pairs battled in the movie). The battle scenes were not necessarily one-on-one. In the earlier episodes of the anime, the four Iga ninjas battled Shougen, bearer of the scroll to the Kouga clan. Later on, they battled another Kouga ninja, Jubei. Two ninjas from the Kouga clan have already fallen, leaving the proportions to 10-on-8.
It almost appeared to us that the Iga ninjas were the villains since they already know about the broken peace agreement between the clans and they were indeed serious about annihilating the rival clans. However, in the succeeding episodes, the number of the warriors were evened out as the truth about the war was unfolded to the Kouga clan.
The distribution of the characters between the opposite clans was almost equal. There are good and evil characters with enough reason the be such in both groups. You wouldn't feel affection nor animosity towards either of them. And this is what I liked best about the anime. But in the end, I still couldn't help but shed a tear on the fate of the two characters, Gennosuke and Oboro. Another beautiful yet sad (love) story.
