Cynically yours

Saturday, October 16th, 2004

This I ask. Have I lowered myself so much that people begin thinking of me as a bargain? Yeah, here’s one Atenista for sale. P10,000 only.

Sorry if I feel that way. I just feel cynical today.

Speaking of being cynical. I dropped by Comic Quest to look for some discounted comic items. Sadly the Filipino titles (the one’s I really collect) aren’t discounted. But I still bought a copy of Siglo and the latest issue of Culture Crash. I haven’t finished reading all the 10 entries in the anthology but so far, I’ve got one thing to say. I find most of the entries cynical, including that one authored by our former COMICOL editor. Although it speaks of freedom, I can’t help feeling negative after reading them.

However, that hasn’t totally drawn me away from Siglo. I also find the entries honest and realistic. Plus, it’s a work of art, of artists wanting to establish the presence of an authentic comic industry in our hope-needing country. I especially liked the one written and drawn by Honoel Ibardolaza. And another surprise (for me) was the fact that one of the authors of Siglo is a PsCE grad! (W00t!)

Random train of thoughts

When I browsed through my little sister’s Friendster account, I saw several particular links to ANTI-celebrity friendster accounts (e.g. ANTI-Khristine Hermosa, ANTI-Sheryn Regis, ANTI-Geoffrey Eigenmann, ANTI-Diether Ocampo, ANTI-Angelika dela Cruz, etc). And yes, these are local showbiz personalities.

Although, I think most of them were created “just for fun”, the remarks were insulting and offensive, most especially to the family and fans of these celebrities. There was one remark there saying “Sheryn’s family is cheap,” WTH? Wait, I’m not saying that I’m a fan to any one of those mentioned but I do respect them for being a part of the local entertainment industry, and (some of them) for having shown talent in acting and singing.

I’m simply irritated. So what did I do? I reported the users of the hate-friendster (how ironic!) accounts, and some of their friends who do not meet the terms of Friendster with regards to using copyrighted materials.

If they think they have every single right on earth the FREEDOM (which I think they have yet to understand) to create these things because of their dislike for these actors/actresses/singers, I too, have the right to dislike them, thereby, I’m airing my complaint to Friendster by reporting the misconduct of these users. (Hey, I reported my sister too.)

Anime rantage. Get Backers is now showing on ABS-CBN. Ban and Ginji! (I didn’t know Ginji is pronounced as “Jinji”). I saw the episode, which Aeyan and the CE Peeps mentioned last summer, where the two main characters pathetically starved themselves, to the point of begging on the streets. LOL. Although it’s not the best anime series I’ve seen (I think Cowboy Bebop IS, among those I’ve seen lately), I’m gonna watch out for bishounen galore in the next episodes.

The Ragnarok Anime is also being shown right after Get Backers. So far, I’ve seen encounters with the Clock Tower Manager (first appearance of a Midgard monster), Thief Bugs (which were referred to as surot and ipis), Orcs, and the Golden Thief Bug. I think it’s quite unfair for players like me that they’ve shown a swordsman (first-job character) defeating a boss (goldie), whereas, in the game, only second-job players can defeat that monster, single-handedly. Well, at least, unlike the MMORPG, the anime has a story to tell, and ending to anticipate.

I’m just wondering about the dreamy-sparkly sound effects of Mulawin. I think they’re similar to NWN’s forest (Charwood, etc) sound effects. I’m suspicious.

Who’s the Sassy Girl?

Thursday, October 7th, 2004

Ji-Hyun Jun Hye Kyo Song
I honestly thought these girls were one, same person. Shame on me. I was wrong. I saw My Sassy Girl first before ever encountering the Korean telenovelas on TV. The first Korean drama shown in GMA7 during the onset of Asian drama hype was Endless Love (Autumn in My Heart), if I’m not again mistaken.

The girls on the pics are Ji-Hyun Jun (left), the sassy girl from the movie, and Hye-Kyo Song, who starred as “Jenny” in the Tagalog-dubbed telenovela mentioned. (I have a very poor memory retention of these Korean names so forgive me for mentioning their movie/video character appearances.) Another soap opera where she starred in is Guardian Angel, which was shown on GMA7.

Recently, Hye Kyo appeared again as “Anna” when Sunshine of Love was featured in ABS-CBN’s Sandara’s Romance. My folly came while repeatedly mentioning “Anna” as the “sassy girl” in the internationally known Korean movie while watching Sunshine of Love. Perhaps, I have overly associated the characters of “Anna” and “the sassy girl”.

So now who’s the Sassy Girl?

It’s her:
Ji-Hyun Jun

Feng Shui and the scare of my life

Sunday, October 3rd, 2004

Until the last minute inside Tokyo Tokyo at Robinsons Metro East, I was sure we aren’t going to watch the movie because of our leader’s school meeting and other engagements. But the meeting was cancelled so we went upstairs to watch Feng Shui.

Being the “fearful as gullible” me who would mute the television everytime a commercial of Nginig is played, and who has run away from the vinyl cover of Ace Frehley (KISS Lead Singer), I was taking off my glasses most of the time and covering my ears during the creepy scenes.

The people behind the movie did a good job on cinematography and sounds. I dare say it compares with famous Asian horror movies. There wasn’t a boring scene, the thing I hate the most about Tagalog movies. I guess they’ve found the magic in moving the camera to break away from the monotonic scenes of usual Filipino movies.

I would recommend anyone to watch this movie. And do watch out for that hair-raising scene at the end. (Well, at least for me.)

Archers win championship

Friday, October 1st, 2004

I thought the game ended last Sunday. :) Congratulations to them. This just reminds me of the winning “trend” for the past 4 years of UAAP championships.

YEAR 2000 - DLSU vs FEU (DLSU won)
YEAR 2001 - ADMU vs DLSU (DLSU won)
YEAR 2002 - ADMU vs DLSU (ADMU won)
YEAR 2003 - ADMU vs FEU (FEU won)
YEAR 2004 - DLSU vs FEU (DLSU won) *

Hmmm… Am I really noticing a trend? Ehehe… I hope so. Cause if not, the Blue Eagles could expect a win after (14 minus 2) 12 years again. XD
