Missing the PC
I’m missing my desktop PC, a lot. Since I had this notebook, I was forced to resign the desktop PC to my brother. It was automatic, not even a decision, since this is a much powerful machine using P4 at 2.5 GHz and 496 MB RAM. The former PC uses Athlon, much cheaper than Pentium but I was the one who customized most of its parts. It was passed to me 2001, I changed its HD, bought and installed the other hardware like the sound and video card. Eventually, the motherboard was replaced. And then the processor since I couldn’t find a motherboard that’s compatible with PIII anymore. It was pretty much my own creation and assembly - custom made for me, in other words. But I have to give it up.
I actually had plans for it beforehand (I wasn’t expecting a laptop.) I was going to reformat the hardisk since I multi-partitioned the 40GB HD into small-sized drives (2 GB, anyone) which I realized was a stupid thing to do. Yes, it prevents the spreading of bad sectors but I think this is a problem of badly-maintained HD’s. I realized later that I could no longer install large programs. I had this whole drive dedicated for Ragnarok. It happened that a patch update cannot be installed in the system anymore since the free space had gone to less than 800MB. I had to remove the BGM files to free up space. Since the processor was really made for Windows XP, I planned to change OS (I was stuck with Windows 98) to improve its performance. And I would’ve installed Linux for future programming use. But the control isn’t mine now so change of plans.
Right now, I’m still adjusting to this system. I’m afraid I cannot use my notebook to perform like a desktop. I can just leave my desktop to download stuff overnight. I can burn CD’s and play games until forever, without worrying about overheating, etc. I don’t really know about issues regarding overheating and all that but anyone wouldn’t want that to happen.
Aside from those, I cannot tweak the hardware. But I’m feeling better towards the control of this gadget through the installation of new programs. But again, hardware limits the capability of software. If you configured your hardware to work under limited time, any kickass program wouldn’t be that kickass. That’s why I’m missing my desktop PC…
